Saturday, October 27 – 3pm local time – Anfield, Liverpool

Liverpool play host to newcomers Cardiff City on Saturday afternoon in week 10 of the 2018-19 English Premier League season.

The Reds will be venturing to secure three cardinal points in Anfield with the hope of not just propelling themselves to the top of the table, but staying there, seeing as leaders Manchester City have a high profile tie with Tottenham Hotspur over the weekend.

Unflagging in their pursuit to bounce back after their defeat away to Napoli last time out, Liverpool returned to winning ways in the UEFA Champions League with a 4-0 romp of Crvena Zvezda, otherwise known as Red Star Belgrade.

The hosts grabbed the lead in the 20th minute when Andy Robertson made a quintessential run on the left flank before cutting it back to Roberto Firmino who fired them into the lead.

Mohamed Salah got on the finishing end of a sweeping move to double the advantage for Liverpool towards the tail end of the first half.

The Egypt international then added his second of the night from the spot after Sadio Mane won a penalty, having been fouled in the area by Vladimir Stojkovic six minutes into the restart.

The brace by Salah saw him reach a landmark half-century of goals, a little more than a year after moving to Anfield from AS Roma.

The Serbian SuperLiga champions, well beyond subdued at this point, still went further behind to a fourth goal by Mane, who redeemed himself having missed a penalty just minutes earlier.

The unbridled performance ensured Liverpool moved top of Group C in the Champions League on six points, a point above Napoli and two ahead of Paris Saint-Germain.

Cardiff City made a remarkable comeback in a 4-2 victory over Fulham last weekend to register their first win in the Premier League since earning promotion to the top tier last season.

Telltale signs of another grim result were evident within the opening eleven minutes when Andre Schurrle scored a picturesque strike from 30 yards, but the Bluebirds restored parity just three minutes later through a low finish by Josh Murphy.

The Welsh side would go ahead in the 20th minute through Bobby Reid after a moment of madness at Fulham’s back line, only for the match to be tantalizingly poised at 2-2 before the break thanks to Ryan Sessegnon.

Callum Paterson squeezed one in midway through the second half to a thunderous reception by the fervent home supporters, before substitute Kadeem Harris put the result well beyond reach for the visitors with a close range finish.

The victory was Neil Warnock’s first in the Premier League this season after nine attempts, and one that lifted his side a place above the relegation zone on goal difference.

Liverpool vs. Cardiff City team news

Jurgen Klopp is set to be without captain Jordan Henderson for Cardiff’s visit after the England international was withdrawn with a hamstring problem during Liverpool’s 1-0 win away to Huddersfield Town last weekend.

Doubts also linger over the fitness of Naby Keita who sustained a hamstring injury while on international duty with Guinean earlier this month.

The trio of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Lee Peltier and Danny Ward remain sidelined for Cardiff’s trip to the North West of England.

Joe Ralls will also be a notable absentee, as the midfielder continues to serve the second of a three-match suspension following his straight red card in the 1-0 defeat away to Tottenham Hotspur a fortnight ago.

Warnock could, however, welcome the return of striker Gary Madine, who missed last week’s win due to a virus.

Liverpool have endured a slight dip in form following draws with Chelsea, Manchester City and a late defeat in Naples.

Their narrow victory over Huddersfield last weekend, supplemented with the midweek rout in the Champions League, will certainly have the Reds raring to go; more so because a win will propel them to the top of the league.

The bluebirds will equally be confident after sailing to victory last Saturday, but their overall squad is a far cry from Liverpool’s exorbitantly assembled side.
