It was easy to see what the fuss is all about regarding Senegal’s hopes of clinching the AFCON 2019 title as Aliou Cisse’s side brushed aside Tanzania with a deserved 2-0 win on Sunday. Making an appearance on the continental stage for the first time in nearly four decades, the Taifa Stars didn’t offer much by way of resistance.
Even without Liverpool forward Sadio Mane, who was suspended for their opening match having picked up two yellow cards during AFCON qualifying, the Lions of Teranga put up a princely performance and went ahead in the 28th minute through Inter Milan forward Keita Balde. The Belgium-based Krepin Diatta doubled the advantage after 64 minutes to seal a straightforward win for Africa’s highest-ranked nation.
The only concern for the Senegalese was their profligacy in the final third. They could have done much more with their 24 shots aimed at Aishi Manula’s goal; something that could have cost them dearly on another day.
Be that as it may, a win in their opening match is exactly what the West Africans needed ahead of their high-octane encounter with Algeria.
It was easy pickings for Algeria in their opening match of Group C as they stomped Kenya 2-0 on Sunday night. Favourites in the last two editions of the tournament but with no trophies to show, the Desert Foxes meant business from the onset as Baghdad Bounedjah and Youcef Belaili peppered the Kenyan goal in the early exchanges.
The deadlock was broken 34 minutes in when Bounedjah converted from the penalty spot after Youcef Atal was brought down in the box. A second goal followed soon after, with Riyad Mahrez latching onto Ismael Bennacer’s cutback and beating the Kenyan goalkeeper with a wickedly deflected left-foot shot just before half-time.
The Harambee Stars were second best in everything and lacked punch for much of the encounter, which allowed Algeria to take their foot off the gas in the second half and cruise to victory.
Senegal vs Algeria AFCON 2019 bet predictions
Senegal and Algeria are level on points and goal difference in Group C, which makes for a spicy encounter on Thursday night.
Although Algeria looked the sharper side attacking-wise, the Lions of Teranga will be back at full strength with the return of Sadio Mane from suspension.
A draw might be a good result for both teams, but considering how the two African powerhouses are overwhelming favourites to make it into the round of 16, they will want to make a statement on their credibility to the crown.
