The 148th Open Championship is shaping up as a landmark occasion in the tournament’s storied history.

This year’s event at Royal Portrush, which kicks off Thursday, July 18, marks only the second time the Open has ever been staged outside the isle of Great Britain.

The first was also at Portrush back in 1951, when Max Faulkner claimed his one and only major title in soggy conditions on Northern Ireland’s Antrim coast.

Some 68 years later, Rory McIlroy will look to emulate that feat on a course where he shot a competitive record 61 as a 16-year-old back in 2005.

British Open 2019 betting predictions

Rory McIlroy to finish top 10 – +100 at Bovada
Rory has had some brilliant spells this year, but he has not strung together four good rounds in a top-tier event since winning the Players Championship in March. Still, the Irishman ran top 10 at the PGA Championship and the US Open, and he should complete the hat-trick on a course he knows better than the rest of the contenders.

Jon Rahm for top continental player – +350 at Bovada
Rahm’s form is right on the money and his results in the majors this year are solid, including a tied-ninth finish at the Masters and a tied-third at Pebble Beach. His big challenger for the Euro crown is Francesco Molinari, who has struggled since his final-round collapse at Augusta National.

Adam Scott for top player outside US and Europe – +600 at Bovada
The 2013 Masters champion has finished inside the top 20 at every major this year, going in the first eight at both the PGA and the US Open. That form stacks up well against the likes of Jason Day (+700), Hideki Matsuyama (+750) and Louis Oosthuizen (+900).

Brooks Koepka to win – +900 at Bovada
Koepka was well below his best in his two starts since the US Open, but we all know he saves his A-game for the majors. The big Floridian has run second or better at six of the last nine majors and will be very hard to beat if his short game holds up around the famed green complexes of the Dunluce Links.
