Wednesday, August 14 – 10pm local time – Vodafone Arena, Istanbul

Liverpool will face Chelsea in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night in an all-Premier League clash at Istanbul’s Vodafone Arena.

The Reds booked their place by beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 to lift the UEFA Champions League trophy, while Chelsea thrashed Arsenal 4-1 in the Europa League final to secure their place in the European curtain riser.

Being the second of seven trophies that Liverpool will contest this season, Jurgen Klopp will be determined to secure this prestigious piece of silverware having already lost the FA Community Shield to Manchester City.

The Reds launched their EPL title bid in convincing fashion as they brushed aside newly promoted Norwich City 4-1 last Friday night.

Norwich skipper Grant Hanley diverted the ball past his own goalkeeper inside seven minutes for the opener before Mohamed Salah doubled Liverpool’s advantage 12 minutes later.

Virgil van Dijk headed the third moments before the half-hour mark, while Divock Origi completed the rout with a header in the 42nd minute.

Daniel Farke’s charges trimmed the goal margin in the 64th minute through Teemu Pukki, but there were no arguments as to who were the runaway winners of the first match of the 2019/20 EPL campaign.

Whereas Klopp had a great warm-up for the UEFA Super Cup, Frank Lampard endured a baptism of fire at Old Trafford in his first competitive match as Chelsea manager.

Manchester United opened their account for the season in the 18th minute through Marcus Rashford, who converted from the spot after the 21-year-old was brought down in the area by Blues defender Kurt Zouma.

Anthony Martial then doubled United’s advantage in the 65th minute with a simple finish before Rashford completed his brace with a goal that was just as brilliant as Paul Pogba’s cross-field pass to set it up.

The icing on the cake was applied when substitute Daniel James introduced himself to the Old Trafford crowd by making it 4-0 with a goal just seven minutes into his debut for the club.

Despite having a number of senior players absent with injury, Chelsea could have registered a much better outcome had Tammy Abraham and Emerson taken their chances.

As such, the Blues now head to the Super Cup with the weight of their biggest opening-day drubbing in 104 league seasons.

Liverpool team news

Adrian is set to replace Alisson Becker between the sticks after the Liverpool no.1 picked up a nasty injury against Norwich that could see him sidelined for several weeks.

Nathaniel Clyne continues to recuperate from a long term knee injury, while Naby Keita’s chances of participation are bleak after the midfielder limped out of training on Tuesday evening with a muscle complaint.

Chelsea team news

N’Golo Kante will have to pass a late fitness test after picking up a knock against United, but Antonio Rudiger and Willian have a good chance of making it to the bench having returned from injury.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek remains sidelined with a ruptured Achilles tendon, while Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi are also out of the tie.

One of the three winners of the Premier League Golden Boot last season, Mohamed Salah continued with his fine goalscoring form by finding the back of the net on the opening day of the season.

Four of the Egyptian’s 26 goals last term came in the Champions League, including a penalty conversion that helped Liverpool beat Spurs 2-0 in the final back in June.

Already flying and firing, Salah has a great chance of finding the back of the net against a very vulnerable and unsettled Chelsea side.

Liverpool vs Chelsea UEFA Super Cup predictions

Both Liverpool and Chelsea will be hoping to win this encounter for various reasons.

The Reds have already lost one of the seven titles available to them this season, and losing another piece of silverware in such a short span of time would not help team morale.

Chelsea, on the other hand, need to get back to winning ways to subvert an early-season inquest into Lampard’s reign at Stamford Bridge.

Unfortunately for the Blues, the UEFA Super Cup is Liverpool’s to lose.
