Belgium v Brazil

Belgium v Brazil

Belgium and Brazil will do battle in one of the most fascinating and high-stakes match-ups of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, fighting for a place in a semi final.

Bovada has Brazil as the betting favorite in this quarterfinals match at +110 with Belgium at +260 and a draw at +240. The Over/Under for this game is set at 2.5 goals.

Hard to believe, but this match between Brazil and Belgium is the only quarterfinals match-up that is between two major soccer powers. In a wild World Cup, each of these teams has gone unbeaten with Belgium winning all of their matches and Brazil winning three and playing to a draw.

Brazil beat Mexico 2-0 in their first knockout stage match where they actually lost the time of possession battle (51% to 49%), but they had more shots and played solid defense. Speaking of the Brazil defense they have three clean sheets in a row, all 2-0 wins, after giving up a goal in their tournament opener in the 1-1 draw with Switzerland.

Brazil star striker Neymar has had his share of his detractors for his antics, but on the pitch he has been legit and in the win over Mexico he scored a goal and had an assist. The PSG striker leads the tournament with 12 shots on target, most chances created, and most fouls.

Belgium’s attack has been in form, for the most part, in Russia scoring 12 goals in their four matches. They came from two goals down to beat Japan 3-2 in the quarterfinals where they were gifted a goal for their first score and reserve Nacer Chadli found the back of the net for the game-winner four minutes into extra time.

The back line of Brazil will be tested by the Belgium attack and Romelu Lukaku, who has four goals in the tournament, and Eden Hazard, who assisted on the equalizer in the Japan match, are the key guys up front that Brazil has to worry about. Can they keep a 4th straight clean sheet? Mexico had their chances in the quarterfinals match, but Brazil kept them at bay and they have eight clean sheets in their last nine matches. Thiago Silva and the back-line defense has a tall task in this quarterfinals match.

Lukaku missed several opportunities in the Japan match has to press the issue on the attack in this match and unlike the last match Belgium will not dominate the time of possession.

Kevin de Bruyne leads the Belgium midfield and his passing was more than solid in the Japan win. Interesting that he will face off in central midfield facing Brazil MF and Manchester City teammate, Fernandinho, who will be taking the place of Casemiro. The latter is suspended for this match after picking up his 2nd yellow in the win over Mexico.

Neymar has gotten help from attacking MF Philippe Coutinho, who had been a part of every goal until the Mexico match before not doing so in the Mexico encounter. The Brazil attack will face a Belgium defense that has two clean sheets in the tournament, but in the other two matches conceded two goals.

Something has got to give in this match, as Belgium is unbeaten in their last 23 matches and Brazil is unbeaten in their last 15 matches.

Belgium may have the slight edge in the midfield with their creative players in that area of the pitch and their solid attack up front. Still, Brazil is Brazil with quality all over the pitch.

In the four all time meetings Brazil has three wins and the only time they faced off in a major tournament they beat Belgium 2-0 in the 2002 World Cup.

The winner of this match faces the winner of the Uruguay vs. France match in the semifinals.

Belgium vs. Brazil betting predictions

It’s tough call in this one with the Belgium attack and solid midfield up against Neymar and company and a Brazil defense that has been great all tournament.

Too bad for Brazil that they will not keep their clean sheet streak alive, but don’t think they will care after beating Belgium 2-1 in a tight match to reach the semifinals.
