The long-awaited 2019/20 English Premier League season kicks off with Liverpool welcoming newly promoted Norwich City to Anfield on Friday night.

The Reds, who conceded the title to Manchester City on the final day of last season, know they can ill-afford a slow start in their quest for their first-ever Premier League crown.

The 2019/20 EPL campaign will in many ways mirror last season, with Man City and Liverpool the clear frontrunners in the race for the title. It seems appropriate that the two sides opened the season last weekend in the FA Community Shield, where Jurgen Klopp’s charges lost 5-4 on post-match penalties after drawing 1-1 with City in regular time.

EPL SEASON PREVIEW: CAN ANYBODY STOP MAN CITY?

Without taking anything away from Pep Guardiola’s side, the Reds were still in holiday day mode and lacked that crucial clinical edge. Nonetheless, there is just something about this Liverpool outfit that invokes a keen sense of fear in the rest of the competition – something that could help them upstage the Citizens at the end of the season.

Norwich City are back in the Premier League after spending three successive seasons in the second tier. The Canaries earned automatic promotion to the English top flight after an impressive season where they finished five points clear atop the Championship table.

Still recuperating from what manager Daniel Farke termed as “sins from the past”, the club hasn’t been able to spend as much as it would wish in the current transfer window despite attracting over £150 million in funding after their triumph last season.

Maintaining Premier League status usually figures as the primary objective for any newly promoted club, but for Norwich City it’s not necessarily a do-or-die matter given how their financial health is their utmost priority at the moment.

Liverpool team news

Sadio Mane spent much of the English summer with Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations and could begin the match on the bench, while James Milner may have to pass a late fitness test due to a muscle complaint. Nathaniel Clyne is ruled out of the encounter with an ACL injury.

Norwich City team news

Centre-back Christoph Zimmerman has been ruled out of action with a knee injury, as have midfielders Louis Thompson and Alexander Tettey with thigh and calf injuries respectively. Swiss defender Timm Klose could, however, be closing in on a return from a hip problem.

Mohamed Salah goalscorer odds

  • Mo Salah to score at anytime – -153.85 at Bovada
  • Mo Salah to score/Liverpool win – +300

While Liverpool boast one of the best attacks in Europe, the biggest threat of all is Mohamed Salah.

The 27-year-old bagged his second successive EPL Golden Boot award last season with 22 goals, sharing the coveted prize with teammate Sadio Mane and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Arsenal.

Despite Egypt’s shock exit at the round of 16 at AFCON 2019, Salah still managed to score two goals for his national team in the continental competition.

He may be a bit rusty, judging by his failure to convert two promising chances against Manchester City, but the like of Norwich will have a hard time stopping the former Chelsea and Roma man.

Liverpool vs Norwich EPL betting predictions

With only one defeat sustained last season, Liverpool did just about everything they could to win the league. The Reds will have to up the ante this campaign, not least because of their mid-season participation in the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup, or else risk losing ground in the title race.

Norwich may have scored for fun in the Championship last season, but the difference in quality between the two sides is like day and night.
