The North London derby is synonymous with charged crowds, combustible temperaments and spectacular goals.
This weekend’s encounter won’t be any different when Arsenal plays host to Tottenham Hotspur, as the derby promises to be every bit as interesting as a football match that unites a city together, as much as it draws the battle lines.
Spurs head into the bout at the Emirates having an extra spring in their step, with this insight gleaned from their thrilling 3-1 triumph over Chelsea last weekend. The Blues, impressively unbeaten in their first twelve games in the Premier League this season, fell headlong as they were utterly outplayed by Mauricio Pochettino charges.
The hosts made their intentions known early on in the match when they grabbed the lead in the eighth minute through Dele Alli. Having won a foul right on the edge of the area on the right flank, Christian Eriksen flashed a well measured cross towards the near post after a decoy run by Ben Davies; one on which Alli flicked into the back of the net with a superb header.
Harry Kane then came up clutch eight minutes later, as the England skipper whistled a shot from 25 yards out; the ball sailing agonizingly past a flat-footed Kepa Arrizabalaga and into the back of the net, as the Chelsea number one was possibly unsighted by defender David Luiz who swung his body out of the way to avoid a costly deflection.
With Chelsea playing away from home and trailing the match with two goals, the Blues struggled to bridge the gap between themselves and a fiendishly impressive Tottenham Hotspur side. The highlight of the match, one that quite rightly hallmarked Chelsea’s slapstick defending on the day, came in the 54th minute when Son Heung-min scored a brilliant individual goal.
Racing into the opposing half to collect a speculative pass from Dele Alli, the Korea forward sprung past Jorginho—who simply couldn’t keep up—and equally dashed past David Luiz before sublimely slotting the ball into the back of the net.
The goal not only put the result beyond the reach of the visitors, but also added a much deserved cherry on the cake, so much that Olivier Giroud’s powerful header low into the corner, five minutes from time, couldn’t lessen the glisten on the final score.
The swashbuckling performance elevated Spurs to third on the log on 30 points, three points behind second-placed Liverpool and five away from leaders Manchester City.
Arsenal’s new found stability under Unai Emery was on exhibition once again over the weekend, as they beat Bournemouth 2-1 to further advance their chances of creeping into the top four. The Gunners stole the lead through an absurd own goal by Jefferson Lerma, but the hosts drew level right at the stroke of half time thorough Joshua King.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang however hogged the headlines once again, as the former Borussia Dortmund forward struck the winner midway through the second half with his eight Premier League goal of the season; drawing him level with Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero who currently leads the charts, nonetheless ahead of the Gabon international due to a superior assist provision.
Arsenal remains fifth in the standings on 27 points despite the victory, but the Gunners are only a point within reach of the top four following Chelsea’s slump.
Nacho Monreal, Danny Welbeck and Konstantinos Mavropanos remains sidelined for the derby with various injures, while Alexandre Lacazette remains a doubt after sitting out the win over Bournemouth due to a groin strain.
Tottenham’s injury list remains lengthy with defenders Davinson Sanchez, Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose all on the treatment table, whereas midfielder Mousa Dembele is similarly ruled out of the fiery clash.
