Sunday, February 25 – 4.30pm local time – Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos County
Gor Mahia will be in high spirits when they take their title defense to Macha.
The Mighty K’Ogalo are expected to jet back into the county on Friday evening after a 3-1 aggregate victory over Leones Vegetarianos, despite registering a repulsive 1-1 draw in Equatorial Guinea.
The draw in Malabo has Gor sailing through to the first round of the CAF Champions League, where they have been pitted against continental heavyweights Esperance de Tunis.
Gor Mahia have in the past been unfashionable on the continental stage, a bugbear Dylan Kerr has pledged to address, but the Englishman’s immediate interest however rests in cementing a solid start in defense of their Kenya Premier League crown.
Despite their travels across the continent, K’Ogallo are still second on the Premier League standings behind Mathare United, having amassed maximum points from their two opening matches against Nakumatt FC and Zoo Kericho respectively.
Mathare have in stark contrast to last season made a comprehensive start to their campaign, as they sit top of the log with seven points in three matches. Seeing as the Slum Boys are however blighted with financial frailties while second placed Gor have a game in hand, it’s hard envisaging the 2008 KPL champions staying at the summit any longer than they already have.
Dylan Kerr’s barricades have no fresh injuries from their trip to West Africa, and Kevin “Ade” Omondi, who featured upfront during the midweek Champions League encounter, will be keen to make a start against his former employers.
Kariobangi likewise have no new injury reports from last weekend’s match with Chemelil Sugar.
Gor Mahia vs. Kariobangi match prediction
Kariobangi Sharks are sixth on the table with five points after three games, having drawn 2-2 with Vihiga United and 1-1 with Chemelil; their only victory, a 1-0 win, coming on the opening day of the season against Nzoia Sugar.
Gor on the other hand have waltz past opposing teams, scoring eight goals while only conceding twice in their first two games.
Kariobangi, currently serving their second season in the top flight division, have attracted backlash from a section of the Gor Mahia fan base after exorbitantly quadrupling all ticket prices for the encounter.
The Sharks may be looking to make a steal out of the ardent Gor supporters, but all indicators point to a comfortable victory by the Green Army.
Prediction: Gor to Win, Total match goals over 2.5
