Manchester City will be licking their lips ahead of Sunday afternoon’s Premier League encounter with Southampton.
The champions will be aiming for nothing short of the bull’s eye when they welcome the beleaguered Saints to the Eithad; with a fragrant performance cementing their place at the helm of the Premier League log, seeing as Liverpool will be on the road against Arsenal this weekend.

The only goal of what failed to fit the billing of an explosive encounter was scored in the sixth minute by English summer signing and former Leicester City forward Riyad Mahrez. Raheem Sterling made the most of Kieran Trippier’s misjudgment from a long ball, as the 23-year old beat his fellow England international before charging to the byline and cutting it back for Mahrez; the new City signing converting cleanly from eight yards to give the visitors an early lead.
The goal put to rest a match that was made ever so arduous by the dire state of the pitch, as the Wembley turf was still fresh from the aftermath of Sunday’s NFL encounter between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Jacksonville Jaguars; a bout which the Super Bowl champions won 24-18 in front of a record NFL crowd for Wembley.
There was no denying that the Citizens deserved to grab the lead, but the champions made life much harder for themselves after Sterling and David Silva failed to convert their chances in the second half. This wooed a late ambush by Spurs who were left ruing their missed chances; none more so than Erik Lamela’s wasted opportunity from an open goal in the closing moments of the game.
City, by virtue of the win, drew level on 26 points with Liverpool after ten matches, albeit ahead of the Merseyside club on goal difference.
It was another disappointing outing for Mark Hughes, as Southampton hit a blank for the second week running following yet another barren draw-this time round against fellow strugglers Newcastle United.
The result as such places the Saints on seven points from the opening ten Premier League matches of the season. This has them incorrigibly flirting with relegation, as they are only two points above safety.
Ilkay Gundogan still remains doubtful for Manchester City after the Germany midfielder limped off during their 2-1 win away to Hoffenheim in the Champions League early last month.
Danilo will likewise be a notable absentee after the Brazilian sustained a knock on the ankle during the most recent international break, whereas goalkeeper Claudio Bravo completes the list with a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to an Achilles tendon injury.
Charlie Austin will miss Southampton’s trip to Manchester due to a shoulder injury, while Pierre Hojbjerg will have to face a late fitness tests having suffered an illness.

Manchester City have been able to stem the tide of the sternest challenge they have faced thus far into the League campaign; drawing against Liverpool and grinding out a victory against Spurs.
The outcome of this encounter shouldn’t as such leave anyone non-pulsed, as the champions look poised to stroll to yet another victory against a weaker opponent.
