FA Cup

FA CupFriday, January 25 – 7:55p.m Local time – Emirates Stadium, London, United Kingdom

Manchester United will be on the road this weekend for the Fourth Round of the FA Cup where they are penciled in for a tantalising match with Arsenal.

Other than being a knockout match in a cup competition, the Friday night encounter will have far-reaching implications for both teams, seeing as they are neck and neck in the race for the top four.

The two teams head into the match in high spirits, having registered impressive wins over the weekend. United prepared for the match in routine fashion, as they beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 at Old Trafford to register their seventh successive win in all competitions under Ole Gunner Solskjaer.

The hosts took the lead from the spot moments before the half hour mark courtesy of Paul Pogba. Nemanja Matic found Pogba with a sublime cross-field pass, one that the France midfielder controlled immaculately before being hounded down by defender Gaetan Bong.

Despite making a trademark stuttering run, the 25-year old made no mistakes from 12 yards, as he thumped the leather beyond the reach of goalkeeper David Button who had gone the right way.

The Seagulls were breached once again three minutes before the end of the first half; this time round the reignited Marcus Rashford finding the back of the net. Diogo Dalot made a brilliant run on the left flank before sending a piercing pass to Rashford who irrepressibly stuck it in for his ninth goal of the season.

The visitors found a way back into the match in the 72nd minute when Pascal Gross controlled the ball with his chest before guiding it in off the crossbar, but having the last word didn’t help on this particular occasion, as United easily made it seven wins out of seven.

Arsenal came out on top in last weekend’s London derby, as they trounced Chelsea 2-0 at the Emirates in the Premier League. Alexandre Lacazette put the hosts ahead in the 14th minute with a wicked yet delightful strike at the near post, while skipper Laurent Koscielny doubled the advantage in the 39th minute with an awkwardly struck header.

Chelsea just couldn’t find a way back into the match, as they went on to sustain a disheartening loss that left Maurizio Sarri ranting at the final whistle. Without however taking anything away from Arsenal, the Blues were quite inept on the day, so much that they didn’t warrant any other result except for a loss.

Hector Bellerin looks set to sit out the encounter due to the knee ligament injury sustained during their triumph over Chelsea, but Henrikh Mkhitaryan could feature against his former side having recently recovered from an ankle injury.

Marcos Rojo and Marouane Fellaini will continue with their spell on the sidelines, as will defender Chris Smalling who has recently been struggling with a foot problem.

Alexis Sanchez might however mark his return to the Emirates in opposition colors having fully recovered from injury.

Marcus Rashford has been nothing but sensational since the arrival of Ole Gunner Solskajaer. Unlike under the previous manager where he could only manage 3 goals in 14 appearances, Rashford has now scored in four consecutive games for the first time in his career—becoming the youngest United player to do so.

With his searing pace and purple patch, and seeing that Romelu Lukaku can’t hold a candle to him upfront, the 21-year old could very well get his name on the score sheet once again.

Arsenal vs. Manchester United betting prediction

Manchester United have won seven games on the bounce, scoring a whopping 19 goals while only conceding four. Ole’s arrival has worked to a treat, as the Red devils are now level on 44 points with fifth placed Arsenal—overcoming an initial 9 point lead to draw level.

Arsenal on the other hand may have won against Chelsea in their last outing, but their defeat against West Ham United a fortnight ago can only highlight the fragilities that have hampered their progress throughout the course of the season.

The Gunners will without question have the unrelenting support of the 12th man, but Manchester United have proven that they can be unfazed even when away from home turf.

Ole Gunner’s Red and White army has made a habit of blitzing past their opponents during the opening half, only to lower the tempo after the interval. Going by Arsenal’s defensive problems and United’s sky high confidence, the Red devils could very well power past their hosts on Friday night.
