Sunday, March 4 – 3:00p.m Local time – Thika Stadium, Kiambu County
Thika United are set to host Mathare United on the closing day of Match Day 5 in the Kenyan Premier League.
Mathare, who have enjoyed a lavish start to the 2018 campaign, were demoted to second place by Gor Mahia on accord of a superior goal difference.
The reigning KLP champions propelled themselves to the summit of the League after a stalemate with Tusker on Wednesday afternoon drew K’Ogalo level with the rest of the pack on the number of games played, having initially missed out due to their participation in the CAF Champions League.
The Slum Boys did everything right when they registered an emphatic 3-1 win over Sofapaka at the Moi International Sports Centre on Sunday, but it was the barren draw with Ulinzi Stars a week before that has left them ruing their missed chance of retaining top spot.
Francis Kimanzi may have guided Mathare to Premier League glory before, having won the title in 2008, but their soaring start to the current campaign is by all means, no mean feat.
Mathare had an embattled campaign last year and could only survive the relegation scare on the final day of the season after salvaging a 2-2 draw with Posta Rangers to finish 13th on the standings.
Whereas a slim 1-0 win over Bandari on the closing day of the season seemed to have rescued Thika United from the drop, the Mount Kenya side still had to win a two-legged playoff against Ushuru FC in order to retain their place in the top division.
Thika have however run out of luck just as much as they have run out of lives, as the Milkmen are once again embroiled in the relegation catfight, seemingly sleepwalking into the National Super League.
Mathare United vs Thika United match prediction
Mathare United remain unbeaten after four outings in the KPL while Thika, sixteenth on the table, are still chasing for their first win having lost twice and drawn their other two matches.
Kimanzi’s charges lost a midweek friendly with the Kenya U-20s by a solitary goal, but the result won’t have a ripple effect on the journeyman’s start to the season, as it was more of a performance assessment of his second string side.
