Both of Iowa and Penn State have a shot, albeit a small one, to say in the BCS picture, but will win in this Big 10 matchup.

Both teams are in the top 25 and for this ESPN game there is no lack of college football betting options for punters to jump on.

Iowa is the 18th ranked team in the nation and they have won three games in a row. They are tied atop the Big 10 West Division with Northwestern, Purdue, and Wisconsin, who was the only team that beat them so they need some help and a strong finish to advance to the conference title game. Iowa is coming off a shutout win and their defense ranks 3rd in the nation.

Penn State had lost two in a row before getting back in the win column in their last game. At 2-2 in conference play in the East Division they are major longshots to win the division, but they can end the season well and get a great bowl game. The Nittany Lions have not played great defense in their last three games, but they have an offense that ranks ninth in the nation putting up an average of 42.9 points per game.

This season Iowa is 6-1 SU with an ATS record of 6-1` and an O/U record of 4-3 and Penn State is 5-2 with an ATS record of 4-3 and an O/U record of 5-2.

The home team has covered the spread in four of the last five games between these Big 10 rivals.

Iowa won their 3rd in a row in their last game smothering Maryland on defense in their 23-0 win. They held the Terrapins to only 115 total yards while they had 310 yards and rushed for 224 yards.

Hawkeyes QB Nate Stanley has had a solid season and did not do much in the shutout win over Maryland only going 11/22 for 86 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He had passed for over 300 yards in his previous two games, but both of those games were losses. Iowa had eight players that carried the ball in the win over Maryland led by Ivory Kelly-Martin with 98 yards. He is the 3rd leading rusher on the team with Toren Young (403 rushing yards 2 TD) and Mekhi Sargent (297 rushing yards 4 TD) ahead of him.

Penn State has stumbled on defense a bit in their last three games and, overall, they only rank 68th in the nation in pass defense and 74th in run defense.

Iowa Penn State got a win in their last game, but it was not an impressive one beating Indiana 33-28 where their defense struggled big time. They gave up 554 total yards in the game, they had 417, but forced three turnovers and played better on the defensive side of the ball in the 2nd half. Trace McSorley generated most of the offense passing for 220 yards with no touchdowns and an interception and he also led PSU with 107 rushing yards.

McSorley has played well under center and ranks second on the Nittany Lions with 554 rushing yards. Miles Sanders leads the team in rushing yards (772) and after going for 162 rushing yards in a loss to Michigan State he only had 72 yards in the win over Indiana.

Iowa’s defense is an all-around solid unit, especially against the run where they rank 2nd in the nation in run defense.

Iowa vs. Penn State betting prediction

Iowa is a good team, but are they that good?

Iowa has not beaten a ranked team this season and that trend will continue in this road game.

Penn State will play well on both sides of the ball and while they will not blow out Iowa, they will win and cover the spread in their house.
