Brazil and Germany start 2018 Russian World Cup at the top of betting

BRAZIL sits at the top of the betting market to win the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, paying +400 at WilliamHill.com to add a sixth title to its fabled footballing history.

The Canarinho have not won the World Cup since 2002 in Japan, when Ronaldo led his nation as the Golden Boot winner.

Sitting behind Brazil in the betting is Germany at +450. After beating Lionel Messi and Argentina in the 2014 final, the Germans will bring in another strong squad to Russia and can’t be discounted.

It can be argued that the true value in the World Cup winner market is France, priced at +600.

Les Bleus bring one of the strongest and most-talented squads into the tournament and the players they have left out could fill a second quality World Cup team.

Spain, winner of the 2010 Cup, also sits at +600 with WilliamHill, while Lionel Messi and Argentina offer+1000 to get redemption on their heart-breaking loss in the final four years ago.

Punters are still struggling with the absence of Italy and the Netherlands – two nations who have been prominent in betting for more than three decades. One WilliamHill representative told BettingPlanet.com that the bookmaker was still receiving multiple inquiries every day leading up to the tournament, asking why the teams — who failed to qualify — are not in the market.

As far as individual accolades go, Brazilian wizard Neymar and Argentinian legend Messi — old teammates at Barcelona — sit at +700 each to receive the Golden Ball, the player of the tournament. Fresh off his Champions League Final celebrations and perhaps playing in his last World Cup at 33 years of age, Christiano Ronaldo is +1800 in the same market, while German passing wizard Mesut Ozil is +2500.

In the fabled Golden Boot market, it’s Neymar and Messi that top the market yet again. Messi sits at +1000, while Neymar follows close behind at +1100.

The man who scored for fun in an EPL season to remember, Englishman Harry Kane, offers some real value at +1400.
