Swedish regulators ready to wield the axe over compliance issues

Sweden gambling news

The Spelinspektionen (formerly Lotteriinspektionen) last Tuesday issued a strong warning to the 66 companies approved to operate under Sweden’s new gambling regulations.

The regulatory body revealed it had received “many complaints and tips on deficiencies in gaming companies in several different areas”.

Most complaints had to do with the failure of some licensees to crosscheck clients’ names against the new Spelpaus self-exclusion register before they either permit them to gamble or send them promotional materials.

Licensees were also told to feature the Spelpaus logo and the other two responsible gambling features on their websites, with active links for all.

The letter said there would be no exceptions and that any operator that failed to comply immediately would face financial penalties of up to 10 per cent of turnover, or even loss of licence.

It is the second time in as many weeks Spelinspektionen has issued a warning due to the failure of some licensees to abide by the terms of their permits.

On January 14, the regulator issued a similar statement after Swedish media published stories about self-excluded players having access to Swedish-licensed gambling sites.

Also, 11 sites – including Betsafe, Bwin and Betsson – sent promotional material to some excluded players.

This week, Spelinspektionen has issued licenses to Lottomatrix Operations Ltd, operators of Jackpot.com, and to LeoVegas’ eSports mobile betting offshoot, Pixel Digital Ltd.
