How to play baccarat punto banco
An overwhelming majority of internet baccarat games use common punto banco rules – the standard mode of play in the Americas, Asia, Australia and the United Kingdom. The aim of the game is to correctly predict which of two hands, Player (Punto) or Banker (Banco), will finish with the higher score. Player does not refer to the punter and Banker does not refer to the dealer; they are 50-50 options much like the even money bets in roulette.
The Player bet pays 1 to 1 (even money) and the Banker bet pays 19 to 20, or even money sans a five per cent house commission. In commission free baccarat, Banker pays even money except on a winning total of six, which pays 1 to 2. There is also a Tie bet that pays 9 to 1 (sometimes 8 to 1) when Player and Banker finish with the exact same score.
The defining feature of baccarat is that all 10-point cards (10, Jack, Queen and King) count for zero. Aces score one point and all other cards count at face value (e.g. Four = four points). Poker suits are irrelevant.
The other quirk of baccarat scores is that only single-digit totals are allowed. When a hand’s points tally reaches double figures, the first digit is dropped (i.e. the 10s become zeroes). For example: if Banker is dealt an Eight and a Nine (17), the score is counted as seven points.
A round of baccarat starts with each hand receiving two cards. If either Player or Banker has a ‘natural’ score of eight or nine points after the initial deal, the result is declared and the hand is finished. If neither draws a natural, a set of specific dealing rules is used to determined whether Player or Banker should receive a third and final card.
If Player has five points or fewer, a third card is dealt. If the two-card score is six points or greater, no third card is dealt. Banker can only draw when Player takes a third card, in which case the following rules apply:
– If Banker has three points, another card is drawn unless Player’s third card is an Eight.
– If Banker has four points, another card is drawn unless Player’s third card is a Zero, One, Eight, or Nine.
– If Banker has five points, another card is drawn only when Player’s third card is a Four, Five, Six, or Seven.
– If Banker has six points, another card is drawn only when Player’s third card is a Six or Seven.
– If Banker has seven points or more, no final card is dealt.
Those conditions may seem convoluted and hard to follow, which is because they are. But Baccarat is a pure chance game in which the dealer controls all actions within the hand, so it doesn’t really matter whether or not you, the punter, remember whether or not Banker should draw a third card. This is especially true of digital baccarat games built with secure random number generators (RNGs), as there is no scope for human dealing error.
