Pittsburg Steelers v NE Patriots NFL Match History & Game Background

The Pats are a 5.5-point favorite in NFL betting markets and they have covered the spread in five of their last seven home games facing the Steelers.

Gone are Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell for the Steelers, who had a tumultuous season last year going 9-6-1 and missing the playoffs. One of the bright spots to the season was beating the Patriots at home 17-10.

The Pats won their 6th Super Bowl last season with the old duo of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick and are the NFL betting favorites to win it all this season.

Even with Bell sitting out all season the Steelers still had an offense that ranked 6th in the league. Ben Roethlisberger led the league with 5.129 yards with 34 TD and 16 INT and JuJu Smith-Schuster led the team with 1,426 yards. Not only is Brown (1,297 yards last season) gone, but TE Jesse James (423 yards) is also gone. Still, Big Ben has weapons and a legit offensive line in front of him.

One of the main reasons the Pittsburgh run game did not have a huge fall off without Bell, was that James Conner stepped in and rushed for 973 yards and also had 497 receiving yards.

New England ranked 12th against the run, but only 2nd against the pass. In last season’s game against the Steelers the Patriots gave up 158 rushing yards and that was with Connor on the sidelines with an injury.

The Patriots have some issues in the beginning of the season, as Rob Gronkowski not only retired, but two other TE’s in Benjamin Watson and Lance Kendricks will miss the first four games of the season due to PED suspensions. Also, right up to the beginning of the season they traded for some new offensive lineman and with David Andrews on IR, so the O-line has not had much time to gel.

Brady had another solid campaign passing for 4,355 yards with 29 TD and 11 TD and the line did a good job protecting him only giving up 21 sacks. However, that line is in flux with the new faces and Andrews out and protecting Brady is key for them in this season opener.

Sony Michel led the Pats as a rookie with 931 rushing yards and three players with at least 720 in in Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman, the recently reinstated Josh Gordan, and RB James White, who also rushed for 425 yards.

The Pittsburgh defense ranked in the top 10 against the pass and the run last season and in the win over New England they held them to 96 rushing yards. While the D did not have a big sack guy up front, they return four players that had at least 4.5 sacks.
