Roger Federer picks up difficult draw at Wimbledon 2018

Roger Federer, the Swiss master, will need to overcome a tricky draw if he is to add another Wimbledon crown to his packed trophy case.

The reigning Wimbledon champ is the top seed at the All England Club and priced at -333.33 with Bovada to make the semifinals of the tournament. He is +175 to go all the way.

When you are assessing a high-seed’s draw in a major you can’t look at the late rounds. The competition will always be fierce at that point. Rather, you have to look at who the top seed might face early.

From that point of view, Federer‘s very-early rounds shouldn’t be difficult. Lukasz Lacko and Dusan Lajovic are the toughest players ahead of the third round that Federer could face.

But the middle rounds could be more than tricky.

Ace-champ Ivo Karlovic is a potential opponent in the third round. He can be a nightmare for anyone and the grass-court surface suits his strong serve well. Leonardo Mayer is also a third-round candidate, a player that held a match point against Federer at the 2014 Shanghai Masters.

The tricky opponent in Federer’s section of the draw ahead of the quarters is Borna Coric. Tennis is ripe for a baby-faced assassin and the 21-year old fits the bill.

Coric defeated Federer on grass just a week ago. Should the two meet on the biggest day in tennis, the second Monday of Wimbledon, then the Croat just might have some confidence in the match.

Coric is priced at +2200 to win his quarter with Bovada. Richard Gasquet, Kevin Anderson, and Sam Querrey are the other players to note. But Coric should probably be considered 2nd favorite behind Federer to make the semis. At +2200, Coric is under-rated in Wimbledon quarter-betting Ante Post.

Those that are looking for single-match angles in the tournament should keep this section of the draw in mind. If Coric and Federer face-off in the 4th round, look for the Croat to do well on game handicaps and set handicaps. To reiterate, it was just last week that Coric hit against Federer at about +425 on the money-line for the Halle final.
