Sweden vs. England tips & odds – FIFA World Cup Quarterfinals betting

Sweden v England

England have a date with destiny on Saturday evening where they are scheduled to face Sweden in the third quarterfinal match of the FIFA World Cup.

There was an outpouring of relief on Tuesday night, with celebrations still rife, after the Three Lions overcame a mulish Colombia side via post-match penalties to book their slot in the last eight of the tournament.

Although Colombia had finished as Group H winners, it was England that began the day the stronger side in a match that was riddled with endless physical confrontations. Both sides nonetheless made futile attempts at probing the opposing defense, with the match ending with a barren draw at the break.

As it were, the Three Lions ended up drawing the first blood, as they had their noses in front three minutes before the hour mark through a Harry Kane penalty. With the harsh reality of elimination staring them dead in the eyes, Colombia mustered several waves of attacks as they began to percolate back into the match- desperately chasing for the equalizer.

The South Americans eventually crept back into the contest at the very tail end through Yerry Mina. The Barcelona defender rose head and shoulders above Harry Maguire before thumping a thunderous header in the dying moments of stoppage time.

With that, the encounter was sent into extra time, with doubt suddenly cast over the Three Lions seeing as they had gotten within touching distance of a historic victory. Unlike England teams of days gone by however, Gareth Southgate’s charges didn’t have any nerves, and if they did, they weren’t vividly exposed.

Both sides were keen not to throw caution to the wind, which unequivocally drove the encounter to the dreaded post match penalties. Despite the thick air of expectation, England maintained a cool head to win 4-3 from the spot; skipper Harry Kane leading from the front with his second successful conversion of the night.

Colombia may have provided tenacious opposition but Sweden will without question prove a hard nut to crack.

Janne Andersson’s charges sealed their place in the quarterfinals after a 1-0 victory over Switzerland; a win that propelled them to the final eight for the first time since the 1994 tournament hosted in the United States.

Emil Forsberg scored the only goal of the match midway through the second half with a strike that deflected off Manuel Akanji.

Although Sweden made plenty of headway throughout the match, Blagult were equally culpable for missing several clear cut chances in the tie- a massive concern ahead of their tournament decider with the English.

Most strikers develop jittery legs when called upon to take two penalties in a single match, but not Harry Kane. The second penalty is by far the hardest, yet the England captain remain calm, cool and collected as he gleefully dispatched the leather past David Ospina.

The strike- scored during regular time- was his sixth of the World Cup campaign and his 14th in 10 appearances under the stewardship of Gareth Southgate.

The 25-year old as such looks to stretch his purple patch with a goal against Sweden, as the Tottenham Hotspur forward leads the charge for the golden boot.

England vs. Sweden betting prediction

Gareth Southgate has managed to monitor the expectations of his players and countrymen alike, in spite of the fact that a considerable number of English supporters are utterly convinced that “It’s coming home!”

The Three Lions overcame their longstanding jinx by winning a penalty shootout at the World Cup for the first time ever, with everything else seemingly possible from here on in.

Sweden have earned their rightful ranking in the last eight, but their journeyman run at the 2018 FIFA World Cup may soon meet its end.
