West Virginia all set to get legal mobile online sports betting apps

West Virginia sports betting fans are about to get a boost to their sportsbook options with both DraftKings and FanDuel set to launch mobile sports betting apps. After a long time of talking about the subject DraftKings, and their rival in the sports betting industry FanDuel; are finally ready to embark on mobile app betting in the state of West Virginia.

Local West Virginia media quoted WV Lottery Director John Myers saying that DraftKings and FanDuel were “very close” to getting all the regulatory cards in place to bring their wagering applications in the state.

Speaking about the WV sports betting app testing Myers stated it is, “completed on one and ongoing on another.” but did not specify which company had already been approved.

There is not an official date of launch for either of the companies’ betting applications but Myers was confident that both of them would be ready to go by the time the NFL betting season kicks off. The NFL season starts with the opening game being on September 5th 2019.

In late 2018 the first mobile betting app went live in West Virginia in the BetLucky app, but it was not so lucky not lasting past March 2019. There have been legal issues between casino operator Delaware North, and their suppliers for betting technology and that has kept the BetLucky app in the dark for several months. On Wednesday August 21, Myers stated that he did not think that the online sports betting app from BetLucky will be ready to go before the football season kicks off.

The land based casinos in the state of West Virginia had total turnover of $7.6 million and just over $700,000 in the five weeks prior to the 3rd of August, the beginning of the 2020 fiscal year in West Virginia.

The land based Penn National Gaming’s Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races is a WV betting operations partner of DraftKings and for the fiscal year of 2019 they took the top spot in West Virginia betting with overall turnover of $6 million for profit of $540,000.
